Seminar on Gas-Electricity Coordination between PV GAS and NLDC

Recently, Petrovietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS) and the National Load Dispatch Center (NLDC) organized a seminar on Gas-Electricity coordination.

Seminar on Gas-Electricity coordination

In his opening speech, PV GAS’ Vice President, Mr. Tran Nhat Huy stated this was an opportunity for both sides to review the operation of the Gas-Electricity system in 2023, and explore information on gas supply for electricity generation as well as LNG to power plants in 2024 and the following years.

A discourse on gas mobilization for electricity generation in 2023 and the plan for 2024

Mr. Pham Quynh, representative of NLDC, delivered a discourse on gas mobilization for electricity generation in 2023, the plan for 2024, and the causes leading to changes in the gas usage in the future.

A discourse on gas system’s operation for electricity generation in 2023 and forecasts for the following years

Mr. Nguyen Vy, General Manager of PV GAS’ Gas Dispatching Center, presented a discourse on gas system’s operation for electricity generation in 2023 and forecasts for the following years, as well as LNG procurement and distribution procedures.

The delegates focused on reviewing and assessing the operation, as well as gas supply for electricity generation in 2023, and identified challenges to enhance efficiency and safety within the Gas-Electricity system. They also discussed the dynamic global fossil fuel market, with coal prices forecasted to decrease significantly in 2024 (around 40-50% compared to 2023), while those of HSFO oil are expected to increase by about 32% in 2024 year over year.

However, alongside the price competitiveness, the delegates also acknowledged the advantages of gas-fired electricity generation. Its flexibility to adjust the output with significant fluctuations throughout the day is considered an important factor in stabilizing the system to ensure energy security, especially when Vietnam's renewable energy sources constitute a large but unstable proportion of the electricity supply. Furthermore, the use of natural gas as a fuel, and specifically LNG, offers significant environmental benefits compared to other fuels like coal or diesel (DO, FO).

Mr. Nguyen Duc Ninh – General Manager at NLDC

Mr. Nguyen Duc Ninh expressed PV GAS should prepare LNG reserves for the dry season of 2024 for power plants during periods of gas shortages or as a contingency for system breakdowns.

PV GAS and NLDC affirmed close coordination

At the conclusion, both parties unanimously agreed to continue closely coordinating to ensure the safety and efficiency of gas supply for electricity generation. They would continue to exchange information to expedite the refinement of procedures for distributing LNG to power plants.
